As Kaelyn gets older, television shows that are interactive and educational seem to be some of her favorites! That's why I knew Ni Hao, Kai-Lan: Princess Kai-lan would be a big hit when I learned we were going to have the opportunity to review it. Kaelyn loves Kai-lan...and the fact that this was 'princess' related made it even better!
Come join adventurous preschooler Kai-lan on her most exciting journey yet as she becomes Princess Kai-lan for a day! This educational DVD features an all new double length episode and two additional new episodes that will introduce children to Mandarin Chinese in a fun, interactive away, as well as teach them how to deal with emotions and social situations.
Ni Hao, Kai-lan: Princess Kai-lan Episode Synopses:
Princess Kai-lan [Double Length Episode]
Kai-lan, Rintoo, Tolee and Hoho are playing in the backyard when they get a visit from their superhero friend, the Monkey King, who really needs their help. Kai-lan and her friends go on an adventure with the Monkey King and see what they can do. The Monkey King gives them robes to wear that give them special powers to float, jump, and spin in the air! They’ll have to use their special powers – and the viewer’s help – to leap over bamboo forests, travel past a moat of giant bubbles, and find their way into the majestic palaces.
The Monkey King tells Kai-lan and friends about a magical kingdom where bears and foxes live together but don’t get along. Kai-lan must use her special powers to get to the palace, and help the foxes and bears become friends!
Lulu’s Cloud
Kai-lan is invited over to Lulu’s magical house in the clouds! She is thrilled that Mr. Dragon is flying her there, but Hoho gets upset when he sees that the games, the food, and even the hats are different than what he’s used to, and soon he wants to go home. It’s up to Kai-lan and the viewer to help Hoho see that if he tries some different things, he might actually like them!
The Moon Festival
Kai-lan is excited for the traditional Chinese Moon Festival, and Hoho is thrilled because he’s finally old enough to stay awake with his friends so they can make lanterns, eat mooncakes, and best of all, watch the moon come out! But when the sky is so cloudy that Hoho can’t see the moon at all, he breaks into tears. Kai-lan and the viewer have to help Hoho find a way to make everything better.
Anyone who is familiar with Ni Hao, Kai-lan knows that it's a play-along, think-along type of show that weaves together Chinese language and culture, preschool related stores, and interactivity with Kai-lan. I love that this DVD and teh episodes it included were no different. It got Kaelyn involved and as always, learning. Kai-lan is a Chinese-American preschooler whose world is infused with Chinese and Chinese American cultures. She and her bilingual buddies speak in English and Mandarin Chinese, but they always need kids' help to find creative solutions to the daily dilemmas they come across. It's this type of story line that really keeps children like Kaelyn (and even adults) interesting and wondering what will happen next.
I was very happy with this DVD and would recommend it to any who has a Kai-lan fan in their household! It's been a fun DVD to watch with Kaelyn, and one I know we'll watch many more times to come.
