Holiday Gift Guide #16: RCA Portable Speaker Review & Giveaway

Between birthdays and holiday get-togethers, we're on the go a lot this time of year. Traveling to see friends and family means a lot of time spent in the car and away from home which can be a lot for anyone...especially kids. That's why I often turn to portable devices to help keep them entertained and am thankful for brands like RCA that make it easy to do just that.

Like most people, our family is familiar with RCA and has owned several of their products over the years. We've always been impressed with the quality, innovation and overall appeal of their electronics products which is why I was thrilled to learn we were going to have the opportunity to review on of their fantastic portable items.

We were sent the RCA Portable Speaker to review.

When the Portable Speaker arrived, I was already impressed with the size. It's small enough to easily clip on to different portable devices and take with us on the go, yet large enough where sound is not sacrificed at all.

I love electronics, but there are some I have a hard time figuring out. Thankfully, that was not the case with the RCA Portable Speaker at all. It couldn't be easier to set up and use which I appreciated (especially since I had two anxious kids standing by my side wanting to use it with the iPad!).

To set up, I first had to fully charge the battery prior to starting initial operation. There's a built-in rechargeable battery which charges via an included USB cable. I knew charging was complete when the red LED indicator changed to blue.

Once it was charged, we were ready to check it out. As I mentioned, we have an iPad that the kids like to watch movies on, both at home and when we're on the go. I decided to test it out with that first by simply connecting it to the device with the included 3.5mm cable. The cable plugs into the AUX In jack at the back of the speaker and then connects to the headphone jack on the audio device you're using. It really is that easy!

There are also adjustable clips which clip onto your tablet, iPad or eReader for maximum portability.

Once it was connected, we turned on the speaker and were able to adjust the volume to our desired level. Using it with the iPad, we hooked it right to the top which worked great. The kids have used it several times with this device and absolutely love the sound quality. They both are able to watch and enjoy a movie easily thanks to this great portable speaker. It's perfect for the car, when we're away from home visiting friends and family, and even at home!

Not only is it great to have with kids, but my husband has already enjoyed using it for his work as well. He gives presentations a lot, and has found that it comes in handy for use with his iPad as well as his laptop. It's really great for lots of different situations, and the fact that it's so versatile has made it a product the whole family can use and enjoy.

One feature that I think is really neat is the fact that it has a built-in "fold type" stand for desktop use. I could see this coming in handy with something like an eReader for instance. It also can attach horizontally or vertically which is a nice feature to have as well.


We've had the opportunity to use the Portable Speaker from RCA several times and are very happy with the quality, ease of use and versatility this product provides. This is the type of product that many people would appreciate having in my opinion. Whether you travel for business, give presentations, or have kids who enjoy watching movies on portable devices...this is a fantastic gift idea for almost anyone on your list this Christmas! I would definitely recommend checking it out!
