I love many things about living in the Midwest. However, one thing I could live without is the 6 months of winter weather we seem to get every year. The bitter temps make it difficult to get outside and stay active as much as my family and I would like. This can easily lead to dreaded pounds once summer comes around. It's usually right around this time of year that I begin really looking at my diet and exercise routine to get back into shape in time for the beach and summer clothes.

When it comes to leading a healthier lifestyle and getting ready for summer, I begin with watching my diet. This means making sure the meals I make for my family are as healthy as possible and that I watch my portions (I'm known for wanting to back for seconds, but often try to stop at one helping). Not just that, but I also make sure to keep easy to grab, healthy snacks around the house. Things like baby carrots, bananas, crackers and grapes are a few of my favorites! Our family also tries to limit the amount of cookies, candy, soda and other unhealthy things we have around our house.

I also try to exercise regularly. I have an elliptical machine which I really should use more, but this time of year especially I try to get on it a few times a week....usually during my kids' naptime. It's amazing how even 20 minutes can make me feel so great. Not only that, but now that we're able to get outdoors more...I love going for walks at least once a day. It's a great way to stay active and I love the time it allows for my family and I to spend together. We often walk around our neighborhood or down to the nearest park. I find that pushing my kids in the stroller and walking briskly makes it an even better workout.

It sounds simple, but it's amazing how watching portions, the amount of unhealthy snacks we eat and our overall activity level really helps in living a healthier lifestyle. As I get ready for summer, it's my goal to continue these healthy habits throughout the year, and find ways to stay motivated and active even when the weather doesn't cooperate.
