With February being Children's Dental Health Month, it's the perfect time to educate ourselves on the importance of developing good dental hygiene practices early on with our children. Dr. Ray Wagner, a pediatrician and someone who is aware that 40% of American children have a cavity by the time they're 6 years old, developed great tasting dental wipes for children 3 months to 2 years old called Spiffies Tooth Wipes.
An all-natural tooth wipe, Spiffies are a great tool to help prevent cavities and tooth decay in young children. They contain a natural ingredient that prevents cavities called xylitol. With 60 years of dental research, Xylitol has consistently been shown to lower tooth decay rates in children by up to 70% and is safe for babies. Not only does it give parents peace of mind that they're doing what's best for their little one's teeth, but with different flavors available...your children are sure to be just as thrilled.
When I learned about Spiffies Tooth Wipes for the first time, I was definitely intrigued. Having grown up with a mom who worked in the dental field, I was always taught the importance of good dental health. I am aware that good oral hygiene starts even before the first tooth erupts, but am the first to admit it's not always easy. My 15 month old has never been a big fan of me wiping his gums, tongue or teeth...and although we do it, I would prefer it not always be a struggle. That's why I was excited to learn that we were going to have the opportunity to review both the Apple and Grape flavors of Spiffies Baby Tooth Wipes.
I have heard great things about xylitol in the past, so the question wasn't a matter of how well I thought the product would work on keeping his teeth healthy and clean as much as it was wondering, how would Kaden like them?! We tried the Grape flavor first.
I removed the wipe from the packet, wrapped it around my index finger and gently wiped his teeth, gums, tongue and inside the cheek surfaces just as the box directed me to do. I expected Kaden to put up a fight, which he began to when I first put my finger in his mouth...but once he realized how great they taste, he actually sat and really enjoyed it. I wish I had known about a product like this when Kaelyn was just starting to get her teeth.
We have also tried the Apple flavor which Kaden seems to really enjoy as well.
One thing I have noticed, is that the wipes make my finger and the area around his mouth a little sticky, but that usually happens with his infant toothpaste as well. With a little water and a washcloth, it's easy to wipe clean.
What's neat, is Spiffies Tooth Wipes can also provide soothing relief when the wipes are chilled and used to massage sore gums. Kaden is currently working on a couple new teeth and I have found this to be very comforting for him.
Not only are there the Spiffies Wipes like the ones we received that come 20 to a box, but there are also several other age-appropriate products parents may want to check out as well. Spiffies also has a Teething Kit which provides an introduction to the Spiffies Tooth Wipes and a 12-page Baby Tooth Guide written by Dr. Wagner, and a product I'm really wanting to try with Kaelyn called Spiffies I Can Brush Solution made specifically for toddlers. It's supposed to be a smooth and tasty alternative to using toothpaste.
I've been really impressed with Spiffies Tooth Wipes...not only because they make wiping Kaden's teeth so much easier now, but more importantly, because I know they are natural, safe and according to the University of California at San Francisco School of Dentistry, are helping prevent cavities and tooth decay. We continue to brush Kaden's teeth twice daily and now have begun using these wipes along with our daily dental hygiene routine and it's going very well. They are especially handy after snacks and when we're out and away from his toothbrush for a time.
If you're looking for an easy way to keep your little one's teeth and gums clean...I would definitely recommend looking into Spiffies Tooth Wipes.

Nothing beats the basics of good oral hygiene that our parents taught us. It may have been hard to stick to but its all worth it.
