Checking Our List: Dyson DC31 Handheld Vacuum Cleaner Review

Posted by Jenna | Sunday, December 05, 2010

As a busy mom I am always looking for ways to save time and make our daily routine run more smoothly....specifically when it comes to cleaning. With two little ones we face our fair share of messes. Between meals and snacks, much of my time is spent cleaning up the crumbs and food that fall to the rug under our table and chairs. It's a job I used to dread, that is, until Dyson came to my rescue.
Upon seeing a timber yard's giant cyclone and the way it spun sawdust out of the air, collecting it in a chamber... James Dyson wondered if this same principle could end the problem of clogged vacuum cleaner bags. Five years and 5,127 prototypes later, a machine that had no bag and no loss of suction was created. Although many manufacturers turned his invention away, he eventually licensed his design in Japan under his own name, DC01. Now, including everything from top of the line vacuum cleaners to fans and hand dryers, Dyson has become a household name known and trusted by people all over.

As I browsed the Dyson website, I couldn't help but be amazed with their wide selection of innovative products...primarily the vacuums. Facing many messes on a daily basis, and in need of an easy and quick way to clean them, I was especially drawn to their DC31 Handheld Vacuum Cleaner. I couldn't have been more thrilled when I learned we were going to have the opportunity to review one!

Features/Benefits:

  • No loss of suction
  • Constant Power
  • Hygienic bin emptying
  • Charge time - 3 1/2 hours
  • 2 year warranty
  • Lightweight and ergonomic
  • LED battery indicator
  • Lifetime filter that doesn't need replacing
  • Combination accessory tool
  • Creivce accessory tool
  • Durable tough construction
When the Dyson DC31 arrived, I couldn't wait to check it out.

Upon opening the box I was pleasantly surprised with the size. For some reason I expected it to be larger, so this was much appreciated...especially considering the fact that it's a handheld vacuum. I couldn't help but be impressed with the incredibly modern and sleek design either. Wow, just look at this!

Of course, the Dyson DC31 Vacuum Cleaner is more than just looks. It is top of the line, offering features I have never seen with any other handheld vacuum before. I could tell right away that the quality is amazing. It's made from the strongest polycarbonate available so I know it is something that will last us a very long time. It comes with a 2 year warranty which is great too!

It comes with two accessories...the Combination accessory which is great for picking up crumbs and larger particles, as well as the crevice tool for cleaning in tight gaps and narrow spaces. By simply pushing the button on the top I can attach whichever I want to use easily.

We use both attachments, but probably the Combination accessory most. It works amazingly well at cleaning up the kids' mealtime messes on the floor and highchair. I love it! This is just one example of what I use it for and how well it does at cleaning the mess...

I have tried several handheld vacuums over the years and this one definitely has it all! There is no loss of suction when using and it has amazing power that doesn't fade from start to finish. I love that you can select either ten minutes of regular air watts, or six minutes at extra power for intense cleaning. The LED batter indicator will flash when there's less than a minute of power left to let me know I need to charge it back up (which takes about 3 1/2 hours).

Before receiving it, I had only seen this handheld vacuum cleaner in pictures. I expected it to not only be larger, but also heavier. This couldn't be farther from the truth though! The DC31 is extremely lightweight, weighing just 2.90 lbs! Not only that, but it's designed with balanced weight distribution for easy handling. I have found it to be incredibly easy to use.

Although I found out very quickly that it works great at cleaning up our many, many messes throughout the day, I couldn't help but wonder how easy it would be to empty. Thankfully, Dyson thought of Hygienic bin emptying which allows me to simply push the red button on the side to empty out the dirt and crumbs. It really is that simple. I love not having to worry about making a mess. I just hold it over the garbage can, push the button, and out comes the dirt and crumbs.

Something I didn't expect was the lifetime filter. What a fantastic idea! I really appreciate that there are no extra costs, and by simply washing the filter once a month I can help keep my vacuum cleaner running as good as new.

The following is a quick video of the Dyson DC31 in action...

We have been very impressed with the Dyson DC31 handheld vacuum. It's great for quick pick-ups and spot cleaning....perfect for the busy mom who is cleaning up after her kids all day long! Gone are the days of having to pull out my full-sized vacuum 10 times a day (which I'm seriously thinking needs to be replaced by a Dyson at some point for sure) when I have this convenient, lightweight, powerful vacuum that does it all. Cleaning has never been easier, or more fun!

If you're in need of a vacuum that helps make life easier by cleaning effectively and quickly, I would highly recommend checking out the Dyson DC31. It's incredibly easy to use, works great, and clean up is a breeze. What more could you ask for?! It would make a fantastic gift this holiday season. I have one of these and LOVE IT! I mean love. Even my husband, who told me before I got it that all handheld vacuums are "crap", now admits that it's the best thing ever. I use ours at least 3 times a day thanks to my toddler, lol. Great review!
