It's that time of year when many parents are busy getting their kids ready for a new school year. As we're busy checking off things on our back-to-school shopping lists, we often overlook the detrimental impact school supplies like pens and pencils can have on the environment.
That's where Paper Mate comes in. They want to help make a difference and have launched a new line of eco-friendly writing utensils, which include biodegradable pens and mechanical pencils. When I first heard about the pens I was very intrigued and excited when I learned about Mom Central and Paper Mate teaming up to create the Plant-A-Pen Challenge. When asked to participate, I was more than happy! What a great way to give Kaelyn (and kids everywhere) a first hand look at how products impact our environment.

1. Plant the biodegradable components of the Paper Mate pen in your backyard and mark the spot with a garden marker or popsicle stick.
2. Check up on it throughout the year and watch as the Paper Mate pen breaks down over time and the components biodegrade back into the soil.
We received paper Mate biodegradable pens and pencils to try out and then use in our own Plant-A-Pen Challenge. When they arrived I was impressed with the quality of the products. I guess I just wasn't sure what they would be like, but after seeing and using them, I can tell you that they're the great quality you would expect from Paper Mate.
We took one of the pens and one of the pencils and planted the biodegradable components of of each in our backyard with Kaelyn.
She didn't really understand what is going to happen, but I think it will be fun (and a great learning experience for us all) to check back on it over time to see how it breaks down.I think it's great that Paper Mate has a new line of environmentally friendly products like this and enjoyed taking part in the Plant-A-Pen Challenge.
