School may be out for the summer, but that doesn't mean reading has to stop or that it can't be fun! Getting kids involved and making it fun is a great way to encourage reading...especially during the summer. The following are some ideas/tips I have learned over the years as a parent and teacher...

  • Rotate books often. - Having been a preschool teacher, I have accumulated a lot of children's books over the years. Instead of putting them ALL out, I put out some of them and change them out with new ones frequently. This gives Kaelyn new and exciting stories to explore which helps encourage her to read more.
  • Read to younger siblings. - There are times when Kaelyn seems to be looking for something to do, and I'll suggest that she pick out a book and read it to Kaden. Although she is only 2 1/2 years old and not actually 'reading' yet, she does a great job with using the pictures to guide her. She and her brother both love this!
  • Offer a quiet and comfortable place to read. - For children to get the most out of reading, it's important that they have a quiet and comfortable place to sit down and read. Kaelyn has a special little chair she loves to sit in. In my classroom I would do things like set up tents, put pillows out, etc.
  • Take children to the library. - Taking your kids to the library and letting them pick out a few books is another great way to encourage reading. They're able to pick out books on their own and find the ones that interest them most.
  • Offer a variety of reading materials. - Aside from books, we also have children's magazines that Kaelyn loves to read as well.

These are just a few of the many things we've done to help encourage Kaelyn to read this summer. One of our newest favorites is the VTech V.Reader! If you missed last week's post, be sure to check it out for more information on this amazing little device for children. It's a fantastic way to promote reading and make it fun at the same time. Last week I included several pictures of how easy it is to use, and this week wanted to share a short video clip of it in use so you could get an even better idea.

Buy It: The V.Reader is available at Target stores and will be available nationwide in August at all key retailers and online at VTechKids.com.

I have my daughter sign up for our local library's summer reading program. She is only 3, but children as young as one can sign up and have a parent read to them for at least 20 minutes a day. The library offers incentives for reading for a certain amount of time. Being able to pick out a prize for every 10 days of reading gives my daughter something to look forward to. It is also nice to let her choose books from the library's collection. She can choose books she likes, and being able to pick out new books every couple of weeks keeps things fresh.

    Several ways:
    * Let them see YOU read. They want to emulate their mommy & daddy.
    * Let them pick their genre/topics. If they aren't interested, they aren't going to enjoy reading it and will probably resist.
    * With our younger children we snuggle up in bed with them and read a few books. It helps get them sleepy and us too!
    * With older children, read the same book as them and have a "book club" discussion/session! You could make a big deal out of it with snacks & the whole nine yards.

My tip is to take them to the library often. Let them see how many wonderful books there are...and let them choose their own to read. Some libraries have summer reading programs where they keep track of the number of books read and offer prizes and play games. My daughters always enjoyed the Summer Reading program at the library. Thanks!

During the summer months we have indoor camp outs where we use sheets and chairs to make tents. We pile all our blankets and pillows in there, bring snacks, a stack of books and we use the flashlight to read books instead of telling stories by the fire. Its a blast! Plus no bugs biting us and potty breaks are a lot easier when you are inside lol

I take my children to the library 3 times a week in the summer. They love to checkout their own books and sometimes they read them in the library. This is a great way to get children to read in the summer.

MANDATORY ENTRY: This 'TIP' is brand new, I just tried it tonight! I set aside a 1/2 hour after dinner (and before bed) to work with my daughter on her reading. I took a book, her favorite, and read it to her (once). After I was done reading to her I told her that if she worked real hard at reading the same story I just finished I would take her swimming tomorrow. And before I could take my next breathe, we were on page 1 sounding out all the words in the 1st paragraph. Amazing! All it took was 'swimming!' It took a little longer than half an hour to get through the entire book, but...I'd spend a lifetime teaching my daughter how to read. I love my little girl!

My tip to encourage reading is something we do at home. We have so many books that I rotate them. I pull out a new tote of books every couple of weeks. My son gets so excited to read because he sees books that he hasn't read in a while and it feels like they are new to him. He loves going through his "new" books. He is 22 months old.

  127. Lina July 22, 2010 at 9:44 AM

My best tip would be to sign them up for programs at the library or take them to garage sales. I think they'd love the idea of hunting for their books!

If you're going to be doing a fun summer activity the next day (museum, beach, fair, sea world etc.) find a book that relates to what you're planning on doing and read the book to/with the kids the day/night before. ie. read a book about whales or dolphins before you go to Sea World. The kids are already excited for the activity and the book is a good way to fuel the excitement in a positive way.

Well, for my kids ages I know some parents actually bribe their kids or MAKE them read for a designated amount of time. Even our school expects that of our kids and I think making reading seem like a chore actually discourages kids from WANTING to lose themselves in a book. I have had 6 kids and every one of them were different in their desire to read. I have looked back and learned that SETTING AN EXAMPLE is the best way to encourage young readers! When my older kids were growing up I had little ones that needed tending to and was going to school and working, and I never had time to sit down and ENJOY a book of my own choosing! I now am a voracious reader and my excitement over books, magazines, and even reading online totally spills over to my kids. An exception is is my older teen now who has reading difficulties and never liked books. To help her understand, I have told her that reading books is like playing a movie in your own mind...you get to picture the characters...you get to be a PART of the story...you can put yourself RIGHT into it, 'direct' it yourself and feel the characters pain or joys or fears. THAT has helped her more than anything could.
To encourage reading during summer especially, I do encourage the kids to sit on the porch swing, or find a cozy place, undisturbed, in their rooms to be able to GET INTO their books. Too many distractions will have them tossing them aside. Another thing my youngest and I do now is that I read the book AFTER she does and then we get all excited when discussing the it! Just like seeing a great movie...you just HAVE to tell someone about it! For my grand kids I try to GIVE them special books they can keep. Somehow owning a few special books makes a difference. We have passed some through generations and my kids think it is VERY cool to have something we have read as parents when little! You just have to PASS IT ON!

I like to plan activities and get books that relate to it. Like, we go to the zoo and the night before we read a book about it. That way the kids get excited about the next day's activity while reading and will relate it to the book. We do this with the aquarium, nature walks, you name it!

I have a reading time set up after dinner, each child gets a turn to pick the book they like and we read that book for the evening, if it's short then we read two. We talk about it as we read and it's so much fun, especially since they are in control of choosing the books. We also read to the little ones once they get in the bed if they want to.

My tip is to let kids pursue their passions when it comes to reading. If they're into dinosaurs, take them to the library and get books about dinosaurs. If they like to dance, find books on dancers. When they're interested in the subject matter, they're more likely to want to read about it.
