As I've mentioned before, there's not much I like about winter. It's cold dreary, and long. The snow is pretty for a time, but after 4+ months the kids and I are ready for nicer weather. When we're cooped up inside, I do my best to find fun activities we can do together. A few months ago I had the opportunity to review a Melissa & Doug Pretend Play Workbench from Gummy Lump. Since that time I have enjoyed browsing their website and am continually amazed with the great selection of children's products offered. Searching for fun activities for Kaelyn to enjoy while indoors, I came across the Melissa & Doug Magnetic Wooden Pattern Blocks and couldn't have been more thrilled to learn we were going to have the opportunity to review it.

As Kaelyn gets older, she enjoys activities that challenge her. I had a feeling pattern blocks would be a big hit, and I was right! When the Magnetic Wooden Pattern Blocks arrived, they caught Kaelyn's eye right away.

As I pulled it out of the box, I was immediately impressed with how compact it is. I absolutely love the fact that everything slips into a sturdy carrying case. When it comes to toys with little pieces, it's a must to have a way to store it all when not in use. This is perfect! Not only is it great for home, but also when we're traveling. There's even a zippered pocket for all of the pattern blocks!

Inside there is a magnetic hand painted wooden board, 120 magnetic wooden shapes and 12 durable pattern cards.

The magnetic board is a very nice size. It's large enough to make all kinds of creations, yet small enough for Kaelyn to take with her wherever we're at. It's also fantastic quality. I love the hand painted wood trim on it, it just makes it that much more unique. Using it couldn't be easier either. Along the top is a slit where the pattern cards slide in. I thought they would just sit right on top of the board, but this is so much better! It keeps them in place and doesn't slide around at all.
The pattern cards are really great. They are durable and best of all, they have simple creations as well as more advanced. Kaelyn has enjoyed doing them all, especially the turtle.



I was amazed how well the magnets stuck to the card and board. I thought they might slip and slide, but they actually stay very well. I can actually stand the board upright and they don't move at all.

For a bit of a challenge for an older child, you can also place the pattern next to the frame and try to duplicate it on the board free hand. For ultimate fun and imagination, children can also create their very own designs without using the pattern cards. I love that it encourages imaginative play and the sky is the limit as to what can be created.

Overall we've been very happy with the Magnetic Wooden Pattern Blocks Kit. It's great quality, convenient and best of all, fun and educational. Kaelyn absolutely loves it and I appreciate the fact that it is helping her develop those fine motor skills, problem solving, and more! It's already provided hours of fun and a lot of learning and I know will be used a lot more over the years. If you're in search of a fun indoors activity with your child, I would highly recommend this one. It's great for home as well as road trips.
