School may be out for the summer, but that doesn't mean reading has to stop or that it can't be fun! Getting kids involved and making it fun is a great way to encourage reading...especially during the summer. The following are some ideas/tips I have learned over the years as a parent and teacher...
Rotate books often. - Having been a preschool teacher, I have accumulated a lot of children's books over the years. Instead of putting them ALL out, I put out some of them and change them out with new ones frequently. This gives Kaelyn new and exciting stories to explore which helps encourage her to read more.
- Read to younger siblings. - There are times when Kaelyn seems to be looking for something to do, and I'll suggest that she pick out a book and read it to Kaden. Although she is only 2 1/2 years old and not actually 'reading' yet, she does a great job with using the pictures to guide her. She and her brother both love this!
- Offer a quiet and comfortable place to read. - For children to get the most out of reading, it's important that they have a quiet and comfortable place to sit down and read. Kaelyn has a special little chair she loves to sit in. In my classroom I would do things like set up tents, put pillows out, etc.
- Take children to the library. - Taking your kids to the library and letting them pick out a few books is another great way to encourage reading. They're able to pick out books on their own and find the ones that interest them most.
- Offer a variety of reading materials. - Aside from books, we also have children's magazines that Kaelyn loves to read as well.

Buy It: The V.Reader is available at Target stores and will be available nationwide in August at all key retailers and online at VTechKids.com.

Quiz and reward:- We have quiz night where we read books to our son and ask him lots of questions and at the end reward him for the answers he give(we give him dollars which can only be spent for buying new books).
ReplyDeleteGetting into the characters of the story:- We usually plan this for weekends. I help my son to make colorful hats for all of us and we all pick a character of the story and read our lines. Give award(made of paper)to our son for encouraging and showing him that he is doing great.
Counting while reading:- We always count pages while reading books. Kids get excited to do this because they like saying to everyone the number of pages they read.

My best summer reading tip is: Go to the library - often!
ReplyDeleteAlso - for encouraging reading while traveling, consider downloading kids picture books on your iPhone. Check out the selection of PicPocket Books on iTunes, also check MomsWithApps www.momswithapps.com for a whole variety of parent-approved, kid-tested apps. Lots of storybooks!

Hmmmm.... my best tip to encoruage kids to read during summertime is to make an event of it... for example, every Wednesday is a trip to the library at 2:00 (tied into puppet/storytime which is at 3:00). The child picks out a few books, listens to storytime and then go for icecream afterwards. Next, schedule an evening or two of reading... say Sunday and Tuesday evenings from 7:00-8:00 is family reading.

My best tip for reading encouragement is to have my oldest daughter read to her younger siblings at bedtime. It is a way for me to hear her reading, it is a great way for her to feel important and it helps the younger ones to hear and see and want to follow in big sis's footsteps!

ReplyDeleteTHe next time your child asks you about animals, space, stars, etc. go together to the library, research material at home, or go online.
ALso,when reading aloud, stop to talk about the story, to predict what will happen, and to look at the pictures on the page. Take time to talk about your reactions to a book. How does your child view the story?

I make fluorescent flash cards for them. With either phrases for them to learn or words. At this moment I made cards for them so they can learn spanish one side has an english word the other side has the spanish word. They're cheap, easy to make and if I forget to take them on a vacation I can always stop by and buy some anywhere.

ReplyDeleteI encourage my kids to read by being a good example. We have tons of books in the house (bookshelves in every room, except bathrooms which have magazine baskets). My husband and I both read for work and fun, and encourage the kids to do the same. I read to them, they read to me, they read to the babies! We spend a lot of time at bookstores and libraries. Honestly, books are like candy to my kids!
ReplyDeleteSometimes, when I know my kids aren't ready to jump at the "why don't you read a book" suggestion to ease their boredom, I just begin reading an interesting book of theirs out loud and within seconds, they come over to sit and listen.

ReplyDeleteTo encourage my kids to read during the summer I pick up a Library summer schedule. My local library has tons of activities going on during the summer. My best tip to get kids to read during the summer is to set up a list prior to school ending. Set a goal. Then, turn it into a contest. For every book read, they get some sort of prize or reward. I've seen it work really well with the kids in my daycare!

Kids are very visual. Make a chart or graph (have them help!), and hang it in a prominent place. Then as they read, or you read to them, mark their progress--pages read, books read, etc... You may want to offer some kind of "prize" for reaching a predetermined goal--or not. Kids should really learn early on that reading is its own reward, but sometimes a tangible pay-off works wonders!

I just started reading to my boys as infants and we read often. Whenever they get interested in a particular subject (my oldest was obsessed with Firetrucks, etc for a while), we go to the library and read all kinds of books about the subject, even just picture books. They love it because they're reading about something they're interested in and I love it because they're reading.

ReplyDeleteWhat works in our family is our local library has a summer reading program that for each book your child reads they get a ticket to win a gift. The more books you read, the more tickets. Plus we're huge fans of the Barnes & Noble and Borders summer reading programs. Your child reads about 10 books, logs them in and they get to choose a free book! Great stores. Thanks!
