Family Reading Night Ideas & VTech V.Reader Giveaway (Ends July 16th)!

Last week I mentioned that I had been selected to be a VTech Voices Blogger thanks to VTech and TheMotherhood! Over the next few weeks I will be posting FUN POSTS AND GIVEAWAYS about reading, ways to encourage and make it fun, and of course, the VTech V.Reader! To celebrate its launch, we were sent a VTech V.Reader to try out for ourselves. So far, Kaelyn is absolutely loving everything about it!
For those who aren't familiar with the V.Reader, it's a unique children's animated e-reading system designed specifically for kids aged 3-7 years old.

Using a Storybook Cartridge with a story on it, the V.Reader brings it to life through animation, narration, character voices, graphics, sounds and music. Children engage with the stories by watching, reading and learning.

We have received two stories so far, Dora The Explorer: Dora and the Three Little Pigs and What's That Noise. Kaelyn loves the fact that the characters are familiar and so lovable. She really enjoys having an animated storyteller right in front of her and watching the story literally come to life. It's neat to watch her little mind working as the story is being told. I love the fact that it highlights each word as the story goes on, as she has already picked up on that and knows when the next page is coming up. What a fantastic way to introduce little ones to literacy and help them develop a love for reading!

It's been SUPER easy for her to use too. Using the touch screen she can easily follow along with the story and play the reading games included to learn each word or sentence. The V.Reader is a great way to help teach reading comprehension, vocabulary, phonics and word building, along with a story dictionary.

The size is perfect for little hands. She wants to take it with her wherever we go...including the car. What a great thing to have with us when traveling! It's not only entertaining, but educational. As a mom and former teacher, I love anything that promotes reading and makes it fun at the same time.

As part of VTech Voices, this week we have been challenged to think of and create a family reading night...a special family event where everyone in the family will gather to spend some quality time reading, and where young kids can read animated stories with their V.Reader.

Family Reading Night Challenge:
Our daughter is only 2 years old, but, when it comes to reading she loves following along and helping us tell the story. She uses the pictures to help guide her as she 'reads'. I love watching her in the beginning stages of literacy and know there are many things we can do together as a family to encourage this. A Family Reading Night I thought of, was first...letting Kaelyn pick out the books she'd like to read. There's always more interest there when it's something she enjoys. To get her involved, it would be fun to take turns reading it together. I could read one page, Daddy could read another, and Kaelyn could read another. Using her imagination and what she picks up on from the pictures...it would make for a really great time I think. I thought we could also take it a step further and do something fun that relates to the story afterward. For instance, if the book was about food...we could make that kind of food together, etc.

Buy It: The V.Reader is available at Target stores and will be available nationwide in August at all key retailers and online at VTechKids.com.

  3. We don't currently have a "Family Reading Night", but it's a great idea! we do make regular trips to the local library, so it would be easy for us to let our son pick out his own books now (he's 19 months, so just old enough I think to start taking an active role). I try to find books that appeal to his interests of his (animals, cars, airplanes, bikes). We can at least ask Daddy to join us one night a week in taking turns reading the books we've picked out that week. My son really likes books that let him act things out, like "Can you thump your chest like the gorilla?" Or "Can you say, Achoo!, too?" So, we could act out the things we read, or have fun making our own sound effects. Thanks!

  11. Our current family reading night involves reading to my 3-year-old every night before bed. She loves to read! She likes to read a stack of books each night, so I try not to put too much of a limit on how many we read. I know it is good for her! We usually read a mix of books that we picked out together at the library, as well as some of her favorites from her own collection. My son is only 5-months-old, but he will sit with us while we read if he is still awake, and I plan to have him participate as he gets older.

  35. We all enjoy reading in our family. There are times (although they are rare) where we all sit around and just quietly read a book. But, my 2-year-old is beginning to understand that a book is more than just pictures to look at so he always wants us to read the books to him. Since we don't (yet) have a VTech V.Reader, I tried to think of another way to bring books to life. My daughter has really enjoyed reading Shel Silverstein poems lately. I think it would be great fun if we got the family together and took turns reading and enacting the poems in the book. The little ones would enjoy watching (and participating when possible) and the older ones (and my husband and I) would enjoy the fun rhymes and making it fun! We'll have to try this...

  44. We read every night before bed. Usually we read just one book, but there are quite a few days a week where we end up reading book after book! Next we are going to try some chapter books and see if she likes them. Thank goodness for the library!

I would love to win this for my niece who will be learning to read. My sister has 4 young children and reads to them often. Thanks for the review and giveaway!

  66. MANDATORY ENTRY: Every single night I read to my daughter while putting her to sleep. If one book doesn't do the job, I read a second book/story until she falls asleep. On some occassions, she will 'try' and read me a story/book. Most of the time she makes the story up according to the pictures.

  87. Almost every night is Family Reading Night for us - my 3yo is rarely tired enough to skip stories, even when I am! We cuddle up in our rocking chair, which belonged to my late grandmother, and just immerse ourselves in the many wonderful imaginary worlds available. The most important part is that she chooses the story - I read her the same books for weeks on end if I have to, I want reading to be her choice so it's always enjoyable for her.

  157. I try to read with my daughter (also 2) every night but if I don't get it in every night we do it a few times a week. I think my little girl would love this! I'll have to see if there's a Winnie the Pooh VReader story - she would be SO into that!

  163. We read to the boys every day. But maybe we should really focus on one night of reading, provide some snacks and all cuddle up on the bed and read a few books as a family.

  170. I read every night before going to bed, I'm reading Riding Lessons right now, same author of Water for Elephants. I have my granddaughter every Saturday night and I'll read that week's library books (we go to the library together every Saturday afternoon) after dinner, we usually go through a good 6 to 7 books, reading several of them over again. I love to read to Carley, she's three years old and listen so nicely and will even ask questions.

  182. At my house every night is family reading night! Every day after Luke's bath, we sit down and read two or three books. He loves to read and would love to have the same book read to him ten times! He would love this!!
